6th Grade Curriculum
Bible: Text "A Light to the Gentiles" This test delves deep into the message of the gospels. The students will then move through the teachings of Jesus, his suffering, resurrection and ascension. Extensive time will then be spent with studies focusing on the birth of the church, Paul's mission successes and struggles as the church finds its way and stands firm in the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Math: The text used is Macmillan/McGraw-Hill. All students will learn to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, decimals and fractions. Two units are devoted to customary and metric units. The pre-algebra concepts of functions, equations and inequalities are then taught. Students will expierience practice with integers and rational numbers. Our spring quarter will focus on geometrical concepts along with ratio, proportions, and probability. Math is taught from a hands-on approach moving to the conceptual when academically ready.
Reading: We will explore the follow elements of fiction: Narrative realistic, historical and comtemporary fiction, folktales, legends, fables, myths, tall tales, classics. songs, letters (personal and functional) diaries, poetry---rhymed and unrhymed, haiku, cinquain, ballads, contemporary, historical. Also included with be plays, proverbs, sayings, idioms, essays, magazines, comics, cartoons, novels (short stories)
Non-fiction is to include exposure to: science, social studies, math, the arts, health, fitness and technology. Procedural and technical texts, exposition, reports, dictionaries, informational posters, encyclopedias, almanacs, thesaurus brochures, diaries/journals, biographies, autobiographies, speeches, ingterviews, advertisements, essay, atlases, newspapers, magazines, memos, directories, business letters, schedules, manuals, promotional material, editorials, policies, warranties, consumer reports, research papers.
